The federal minimum table

The 2010 ADA Standards set a minimum number of accessible spaces that grows with the total parking count. Most facilities use the table below. Hospital outpatient facilities and rehabilitation or outpatient physical therapy facilities have their own percentage-based requirements because of higher expected use. Van-accessible spaces are counted as at least one of every six accessible spaces, and never fewer than one.

Limitations

This estimates the minimum stall count only. It is not a compliance determination and does not evaluate access aisles, slopes, accessible routes, signage, stall dimensions, or existing-condition exceptions. State and local codes, including California, may require more accessible or van spaces. Confirm the full requirement with a CASp inspector or design professional.

ADA parking questions

How many ADA parking spaces are required?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards, the minimum scales with total parking, from 1 space for small lots up to 2 percent of total for 501 to 1000 spaces. This is a federal minimum and local rules may be stricter.

How many van-accessible spaces do I need?

At least one of every six accessible spaces must be van-accessible, and never fewer than one.
